Women in Islam
"On the cultural level, women have not been treated as men's equals. Such inequality has evolved as an artifact of the preferences and actions of patriarchal authorities (termed scripturalists here) after the Prophet's death, including certain rulers and administrators, most jurists, and some intellectuals" (Hoffman-Ladd 323)No subject intrigues me more than the status of women in the more-so patriarchal society of the Islamic community. Women have always been lower than men in Islamic society. There are many examples throughout history. For instance, men had the control over the marriage, the divorce, and family life. Many rules throughout the years of Islamic society, there has been many rules in order to keep women at a lower state than men. Issues such as veiling and education gave the men another step of power over the women. Women weren't looked upon as equals until later into the Islamic era. They weren't that much equal, but had more rights based the moral responsibility for their actions. They had more power over their life and how to deal with it. I do agree with the characteristic that women are deemed as unequal in Muslim society. They were considered a burden: especially at birth. They were considered
Along with marriage and divorce laws, women also had to encounter laws that separated them from the men. "Women weren't permitted in the same schools as men and weren't permitted to drive or uncovered in public" (Denny, 352). In the Sura it is claimed that women should wear a head scarf in order to "cover up their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof"... "they should draw their veils over their bosoms" (Sura, 24:31). Many Muslim Scholars argue that this is a direct quote from God ordering all women to cover their hair, while others say it is the bosom which should be covered. That is why Muslim women are to cover themselves so thoroughly that only their eyes and fingers should be showing. The women are very secluded in the Muslim society. A prime example is the Prophet's Muhammad's wives were to serve guests from behind a curtain, "When you ask any of the wives of the Prophet of Muhammad for something, ask from behind a curtain. That is purer for you hearts and for their hearts" (Denny, 351:Sura) In Islam women have not been treated as equals. Women's rights as individuals were not recognized, they were excluded from many affairs. Women had no control over their property or themselves. They were forced to take the back seat while men drove the cars. They were forced into marriages and cast away when the marriage wasn't working for the husband. The wives had to hold the shame they felt because they had given birth to a baby girl, a burden, as seen in the Islamic societies. With all these har
