Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was one of the most important events in the 19th century. Without it America would not be as populated and economically strong as it is today. The California Gold Rush taught people that failure was okay and made people take risks. The California Gold Rush was the Las Vegas of the 19th century. The California Gold Rush blew the United States economy sky high and gave America a very useful and attractive resource. The California Gold Rush started at John Sutter's Mill in the beginning of 1848. "The first gold, discovered in January, 1848. Now if Mrs. Wimmer California Gold Rush possesses a piece which has been found earlier than mine Mr. Marshall can tell, as it was probably received from him. I think Mr. Marshall could have hardly known himself, which was exactly the first little piece, among the whole." The land route was only usable by the people living in the United States because there is no way to walk over water. The land route was not used a lot because of the risks of bandits and diseases such as Cholera and Scurvy. Of all the deaths during the California Gold Rush, Cholera killed at least 80%. The water method was used much more often because of two main reasons, it was faster and there was no risk of Cholera or Scurvy. Many people took the sea route because they wanted to save their energy for living in California during the Gold Rush. During the Gold Rush slavery was still legal and many brought their slaves with them to Gold Rush California. They had the slaves work for them while they just sat and rested or worked with the slave and got twice as much work done. The other miners did not like this; they did not feel that it was fair that someone was mining for other people while getting no profit themselves. Many miners helped the slaves escape to freedom and that was part of the reason why California joined the Union later.
