They had the slaves work for them while they just sat and rested or worked with the slave and got twice as much work done. The other miners did not like this; they did not feel that it was fair that someone was mining for other people while getting no profit themselves. Many miners helped the slaves escape to freedom and that was part of the reason why California joined the Union later.
