Lord of the Flies Human Emotio

In William Golding's novel, The Lord of the Flies, Golding suggests that the ability of human beings living peaceably is not possible, because human nature forces people to judge others based on trust, hate, and differences. Golding implies that making judgments leads to disorder in a group of young boys, but not necessarily all human beings.

When the group of boys first forms, the members all single out one member who they can trust and know will be a good leader. The immediate leader is Ralph. He calls all the boys to the main rock on the island and immediately explains to them what his ideas are and listens to everyone else's opinions. "Ralph, Ralph!" "Let him be chief"(22)! Ralph gives off an aura of being experienced, wise and mature which attracts the rest of the boys, but in truth is exactly the same as the rest of the twelve-year-old sandy haired boys who go to school and love to play. When other boys try to step up to the challenge of being leaders they are brushed off because they have already found such a great leader. "The circle of boys broke into applause. Even the choir applauded and the freckles on Jack's face disappeared under a blush of mortification"(23). After Jack, a boy who challenges Ralph to be a leader,

is humiliated in front of the other group of boys he is upset and wants revenge.

However some boys can see through Jack's ideas and know exactly why he does what he does. In the group, Ralph's good friend Piggy could see through Jack's malicious ideas. "I'm scared of him and that's why I know him. If you are scared of someone you hate him but you can't stop thinking about him. You kid yourself he's all right really, and then you see him again, it's like asthma and you can't breathe"(93). Piggy explains his view of Jack to Ralph. He understands Jack's ideas because through out the novel all Jack did was torture and make fun of Piggy. The only problem is that since Piggy is different no one will believe him, let alone listen to what he has to say. The society of boys is the same as any society of adults in accepting the differences of other members. Piggy, this is a nickname that was given to him by the other boys because he was very heavy, is made fun of because he is different. "The fat boy stood by him breathing hard" (9). He is not only fat, but he has asthma as well. This makes him an easier target to make fun of and ostracize. Only after Piggy gets killed do the rest of the boys realize his importance in the group. He is the real leader, without him the
