John Galsworthy was born in 1867 in Kingston Hill, Surrey, into an upper-middle-class family. John Galsworthy was educated at Harrow and studied law at New College Oxford. Though he was trained as a lawyer, he never practiced law. He began writing at the age of twenty-eight, inspired by his future wife. He married his cousin's wife, Ada Galsworthy in 1905 after a 10-year affair. Galsworthy's first novel, written in 1906 was, The Man of Property. He first published under the pen name John Sinjohn. Other books written by Galsworthy include: From the Four (1897), Jocelyn (1898), In Chancery (1920), To Let (1921), The Island Pharisees (1904), The Forsyte Saga, The White Monkey (1924), The Silver Spoon (1926), Swan Song (1928), A Silent Wooing, Passersby (1927), On Forsyte Change (1930), The Silver Box (1906), Strife (1909), Justice (1910), The Mob (1914) and The Skin Game (1920).
