The First and the Last

John Galsworthy was born in 1867 in Kingston Hill, Surrey, into an upper-middle-class family. John Galsworthy was educated at Harrow and studied law at New College Oxford. Though he was trained as a lawyer, he never practiced law. He began writing at the age of twenty-eight, inspired by his future wife. He married his cousin's wife, Ada Galsworthy in 1905 after a 10-year affair. Galsworthy's first novel, written in 1906 was, The Man of Property. He first published under the pen name John Sinjohn. Other books written by Galsworthy include: From the Four (1897), Jocelyn (1898), In Chancery (1920), To Let (1921), The Island Pharisees (1904), The Forsyte Saga, The White Monkey (1924), The Silver Spoon (1926), Swan Song (1928), A Silent Wooing, Passersby (1927), On Forsyte Change (1930), The Silver Box (1906), Strife (1909), Justice (1910), The Mob (1914) and The Skin Game (1920). Galsworthy was awarded the Order of Merit in 1929, and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932. John Galsworthy died in 1933.
