Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies by William GoldingWilliam Golding: was born in the beginning of the 20th century and grew up in the years before World War II. That war changed thinking about man's essential nature. You can see the influence of this shift in thinking in Golding's works. Golding yearned to be like the characters in the fables and stories he read. The island setting for Lord of the Flies and the names of the persons were taken from Coral Island. At about the age of twelve he decided to be a writer so he studied literature in college. After the second World War W. Golding came to believe that there was a very dark and evil side to man. "The war" he said "was very unlike. It taught us not fighting but about the given nature of man. His first three novels were very much like novels he had read, and he had called them the "rubbish" of imitation. His forth novel was "Lord of the Flies" 1983 he earned the Nobel price for literature and died 10 years later in 1993. Plot: The action takes place on the mountain, where Ralph assembles the boys by blowing the conch. Ralph the is elected as leader. They realise that they're on an island. Then they decide to light a fire on the mountain as a signal and for protecti
Jack's savage hunters set nearly the whole island on fire and try to hunt Ralph down. A ship sees the smoke and rescues the boys. One night the hunters raid the shelters and steal Piggy's glasses. Jack is tall and thin, red-haired and ugly. The reader knows nothing about his past. At the beginning he's co-operative and positive in his behaviour. William Golding presented numerous themes and basic ideas that give the reader something to think about. One of the most basic and obvious themes is that society holds everyone together, and without these conditions, our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost. Without society's rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light. The lord of the flies is the head of a pig which they stuck on a spear. It is a metaphor for all evil and bad acting of the boys. The Lord of the flies is like a good/devil for them. They fear him - and fear let make them crazy things which they never thought they would be able to do.
