In the late 1800's, women always have experiences of having to face the overwhelming fact that the century is a male dominated society and sometimes women suffer because of that repression. One of the women suffered under this society is the narrator in "The Yellow Paper". The major crisis experienced by the narrator in "The Yellow Paper" is that the suffered experience under a male dominated society and leads to changes for better in her life basic on the criteria of the narrator's physically release, the narrator's mentally release, and woman's status in that society.
The first change for better in narrator's life after her suffered experience under a male dominated society is that she got the physically release. She obviously loves her husband and trusts him but has some underlying feeling that maybe his prescription of total bed rest is not working for her. The story mentions that she has an older brother who is also a physician and concurs with her husbands theory, thus leaving her no choice but to subject herself to this torment of being totally alone in this room with the yellow wallpaper. The second change for better in narrator's life is that she got the mentally release after her suffered experience under a male dominated society. The narrator seeing herself in the woman and when she sees the woman creeping outside, she sees herself. "I always lock the door when I creep by daylight. I can't do it at night, for I know John would suspect something at once." When she creeps outside she locks the door. She is afraid her husband will take away the only comfort she had know since she was subjected to this "rest cure" But at the end of the story, the narrator "Kept on creeping just the same, but I looked at him over my shoulder. I've got out at last." "Now why should that man have fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so that I had to creep over him every time!" The narrator begin from "afraid" her husband, then she "lock the door", and she finally "creep over him". The narrator finally got the mentally release, she did not just follow her husband's idea, she can finally had her own idea to "got out at last."
