Gerald Stern characterization of Li-Young Lee's poetry is very true. Lee takes a lot of time in constructing the humility, which is apparent in his poems. Unlike Lee, John Berryman is far from the humble type. Reading the poem A Story by Lee I see that the words role off the page in a harmonic sense in which Lee portrays many subtle attitudes coming from a man. You can also see the subtle search for understanding. Understanding of the Mans love for the father, and his son's supplication lead up to silence. This line is also a five beat line but does not have the same kind of dexterity that Lee has when he is writing his works. I do not agree with Stern on the point of a desperate search for wisdom and understanding, instead I feel as though Lee has an understanding that his words are more powerful when you can lay them flat on the paper and turn them into a revelation of some sort.
