The ads and stores may be pushing the consumer to buy the big-screen, wide screen, flat screen, digital, and high definition TV's but many buyers are buying the less expensive traditional TV's.

TV's are offering more than ever for the dollar. Our tests have confirmed, that there are plenty of high quality sets on the market. Many of these sets have a long list of features that were never offered at such a low price. Many of these sets also allow connection of your other entertainment utilities such as your stereo system, VCR's, DVD's, and game systems.

There are also the flat screens. Many manufacturers have at least one TV with little or no curve in the screen. Sony currently has the largest variety of these TV's. These flat screen TV's usually cost about $100 more than a conventional TV but offer you fewer reflections and higher picture quality. The five Sony flat-screen TV's we tested all had very good picture quality, and were among the best when using separate video inputs. We advise you to compare the difference if you are interested in a flat screen TV, to see if it is worth the extra cash for your purposes.

Most of the TV's we tested had such performance-enhancing or convenient features. One of these was a comb filter. A comb filter may enhance picture quality, depending on the quality of the comb filter.

There were forty 27 inch and 32 inch sets, with a variety of features, tested for this report. We chose this size because we found that these sizes were the most likely to be chosen for the family TV.

Another thing that was found to be useful was the remote. Most of these TV's came with a universal remote allowing you to program it so that it runs your TV, stereo, VCR and other electronic devices.
