chinese vs. russian communism
The twentieth century became an era of massive change and Revolution in the Old World. It was an age of wars, expansion, and the enactment of new and radical ideas. Two very contrasting countries conducted extreme revolutions during the first half of this century, bringing into context the startling ideas of Karl Marx. Although the ways in which Russia and China instituted their new economic programs were quite similar, their foreign policy and methods by which the communists came to power greatly differed. Russia's Bolshevik Revolution was one of the quickest and less-debated revolutions of all time. Taking place in just a number of weeks (if that), the entire system of government shifted from Kerensky's makeshift provisional government to Lenin's more dramatic one. On the other hand, Mao's revolution had been a long and extraordinary affair, taking nearly twenty years and costing millions of lives. Russia had struggled, fallen, and gotten back on it's feet a number of times before Mao took over communist China. Russia had never really asked for help of any European country, let alone Japan or the USA. It had survived revolution on it's own, and in a relatively organized manner as well. They looked to no one for guidance or help, not even Germany who was growing with Nazi unrest. China was terrorized by Japanese invasion which in turn spurned the revolution itself. China was a shattered country by the time Mao took control. They looked to not only their communist neighbor Russia for guidance, but financial help from the United States. Russia began retaliating against it's European counterparts by launching "Sputnik" in 1957, jumping ahead of even the very powerful United Stated in the Space Race. The Chinese looked favorably upon this event and backed them. However, the USSR made no attempt to back the Chinese when the US announced their firm support for Chiang Kai-shek between the mainland and Taiwan. Soon, the Russians withdrew their specialist advisers and their blueprints from China which had helped them immensely in modernizing, next breaking off economic aid. It w
