Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He was born Christofero Columbo, after the patron saint. His father was Donenico Columbo, a weaver and wool dealer. Columbus had two brothers, Diego and Bartolome. Historians are certain that Columbus was not a noble. They can substantiate this by the lack of recorded family records.
Columbus went to sea at the age of fourteen and was shipwrecked off Portugal. And settled there in 1470. 1n 1476 ,when Columbus was about twenty-five years old, he moved in with his brother Bartolome. Bartolome was a brilliant cartographer and calligrapher and a book seller. It was said here was where Columbus developed his expertise in these fields and gained a great deal of knowledge from books and conversations.
Sometime during 1493, (4 to 6 weeks after his return from his first voyage) Columbus was at a party. One member of the group said to him, "If you had not undertaken the expedition, someone else from Spain would have." Columbus made no reply but took a hard boiled egg and said, "Gentlemen, you make it stand here without support, as I will, who was the first to discover the Indies." The egg was passed around the table, each person attempting to make it stand without support. No one succeeded. When the egg came to Columbus' hands, by bearing it down on the table he fixed it, having crushed a little on one end, making the point to the confused dinner partners that, after the deed is done, everybody knows how to do it.
