the postman

A detailed Summary of the postman

And it was at that age-Poetry arrived in search of me.

I don¯t know, I don't know where it comes from,

No, they were not voices, they were not words, nor silence,

but from a street I was summoned from the branches of night,

abruptly from the others, among violent fines or returning alone,

there I was without a face, and it touched me.

The film concludes with a scrolling Neruda poem, which was given to the last Massimo Troisi who died of a heart failure after °Il postino± was finished shooting.

Actually my partner and I were very reluctant in giving you this presentation on °Il postino±, because the film is just like a poem. We should feel it by heart rather than analyze it through theories. Just like Neruda put it, °when you explain it, poetry becomes banal-better than any explain is the experience of feelings that poetry can reveal to a nature open enough to understand it-try and walk slowly along the seashore as far as the bay and around you.±

The way Neruda interprets poery is just the way the director interprets film. Indeed, the film leaves us a feel

Though the film is meaningful, it covers love, acceptance, human value, beauty, politics and self-discovery, the director did not develop these things fully and analyze them further. He just scratched them on the surface. It seems that the director tried to constrain the emotion, possibly because he believed that these things were so delicate that we both could not and need not understand and describe them. We could only sense it by our feeling but could not analyze it by our reason.

The words, the acting and the image do not reveal much emotion while the emotion seeps through the music unconsciously.

When people talk about politics, what comes into our mind are the serious face of the politicians, the boring speeches and the fierce party struggles. But here in the movie, politics has a totally different meaning. It¯s about speaking for the working class. And writing poetry of the mistreat. It¯s about encouraging common. People to speak up. For their rights and make voice heard. It helps Mario to know more about life, so it has been put a human face.

To find the effect of these flash-backs, I assume that the flash-backs were not used.

The main melody of the music helps to portray Mario. According to the function, I divide the music into three kinds. The first kind reveals the relationship between Mario and Neruda. The second one reveals the love between Mario and Beatrice. The third one reveals Mario¯s own thought.

You may remember Neruda¯s promise to Mario: I¯ll miss you. I¯ll write to you. But he didn¯t. You may also remember that Neruda has told Mario about the miner in Pampa. Neruda said, °I felt I had to write something to help the man in his struggle.± But when he was interviewed by newspaper, he did not mention the poor life of the people in Mario¯s island. He just mention the beauty of that island. To him, are all these people just like the beautiful view? He write them in his poem to show his literary talent and nobility but do not really care for them. Is he like the politicians who cheat the people on the island for their vote? The only different is that he hinds behind beautiful mask of the words of poem.

Another song is an Argentinean tango music °Madres Elva±, sang by Charles Gardel. The poet and his wife dance to the music, expressing their sentimental attachment to their homeland. The song adds the nostalgic element to the movie.
