Their Eyes Were Watching God

Would you ever want to be married and spend the rest of your life with someone you never loved? Janie finds security in her first two marriages to Logan Killiks, and Joe Starks, but a marriage cannot survive unless true love is involved like the marriage with Tea Cake. Different marriages in Janie's life will be analyzed to examine her growing stages in life.

Janie's first marriage to Logan Killiks, wasn't Janie's ideal marriage. The whole point of Janie's first marriage was to have financial security and be prepared for the future. Nanny arranged this entire marriage. This marriage seemed to be more of a favor to Nanny because she wanted Janie to be financially secure before she died. Nanny didn't want Janie to end up like herself, or Janie's mother. They both ended up raped and pregnant by the men that raped them. Janie had seemed to experiment and had begun to gain interest in men when she first kissed a boy over the fence, by the name of Johnny Taylor, but Nanny didn't want a poor unemployed negro to be Janie's husband. When Janie was with Tea Cake, she loved everything he wanted to do. In this relationship unlike the others, their choices were equal. Equality seems to be the key within their relationship. It's what makes their relationship last longer than the other ones by far. Janie always seems to follow what her husband wants or likes. For example, when with Joe, she wore hair rags, even if she didn't like them, and when she is with Tea Cake, she combs her hair because Tea Cake likes combed hair. Her ties with Joe seem to be fully erased after two main events, burning of the hair rags and selling the store. Janie's seemed to develop maturity in her life because of these pasts' marriages. She finds herself and understands true love and happiness with Tea Cake. Janie has found her true awakening in life after her relationship with Tea Cake. She experiences true feelings rather than fake ones that were brought upon her lasts two marriages. Tea Cakes unfortunate death seems to bring out something in Janie. Something good becomes of Tea Cakes death. Janie truly finds herself and understands her freedom. She doesn't need a man for support when she's already support
