Gatsby
"In literature as in life, a character may set a high personal goal. In some ways, such a personal goal may be vary valuable and result in a better life. In other ways, such a goal may make life difficult and result in suffering." I agree with this quote. Somebody's personal goal can make life better in one way and also make it more difficult in another. One character in which suffers and fails but also achieves a better living through his goal is Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. He is a perfect example of a man who sets his personal goals and suffers a great deal because of them but also improves his life. The other character who fits this quote would be Daisy. Daisy is another character who achieves her goal and a better life but also because of this goal suffers in her life too. Gatsby achieves his goal of being rich in the novel. His fortune lets him live a better life than what he grew up to. As James Gatz he grew up on a farm in the Mid-West with little to no money. When he achieved his goal as Jay Gatsby he bettered his life he was rich like he always wanted to be. He had multiple cars, a giant house, and plenty of material things filling that house. He threw giant parties, which almost
The other character who gains and suffers through their personal goal is Daisy. Daisy's personal goal was money the acquisition of it and the holding on to it. She accomplishes her goal by marrying Tom. So this personal goal of hers did make her better off. She was rich now and had a man with who would always be accepted she could do now what she wanted. Daisy also lost real love with Gatsby. She met Gatsby and fell in love with him before the war. When Gatsby went off to war she married Tom. She married a man she really didn't love in order to achieve her personal goal because of this she isn't happy in her current situation. Her choice of wealth over love makes life difficult for her. This is evident when she's talking about her daughter and said "And I hope she'll be a fool- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." She wishes that her daughter was oblivious to the world and didn't know how it works kind of like how she feels. Gatsby set his goal to high for him to achieve the right way so it cost him. It cost him a life full of difficulty and suffering. He centered his life around an unachievable goal for himself, a woman who wanted money and stability. So at the end with this goal gone he was destroyed since it was his whole life. The only part of the goal he did achieve was becoming rich and living a rich mans life. The Great Gatsby is a perfect example of the quote. The novel addresses the basic goals of America. The American dream is an obtainment of wealth. Well like the quote above says happiness does come with some bitterness when trying to reach your goal. Through the characters the readers are shown that y
