Reality shows have been around for years in other parts of the world but only just recently in Australia has it moved from a subculture into a mainstream.Reality TV is a mixture of documentaries, dramas and game shows, putting people into unscripted, unpredictable situations. CBS experimented with this format more than 30 years ago, with the TV show Wanted, which ran from October 1955 through to January 1956. But the Granddaddy of the reality TV genre is Candid Camera which has been on television on and off since 1958. Currently, almost all of the major networks have some type of reality series. Ten has aired the majority of shows from a show that placed a group of couples on an island and tempted them with a group of singles, which was called Temptation Island to the latest instalment "Boot Camp." A group of men and women with no prior military experience are placed in boot camp to see who will survive. But the most famous and popular reality television show is Survivor. It's an American show, which began in March 2000, for 39 days. 16 castaways were marooned somewhere in the South China Sea. Day by Day by day the location and tropical sun will test the endurance of the castaways. The survivors must form their own co-operative island society, building shelter, gathering and catching food. On the last day of each three-day cycle, the castaways must form a tribal council. At this meeting each person places a secret ballot vote to send one fellow castaway home.
