exercise metabolism

The purpose of this lab is to learn about indirect calorimetry by testing humans lying at rest. We also see how Resting Metabolic Rate is altered by diet and body composition. Last, we learn the techniques used in measuring gas exchange, in this case, the use of a tissot tank and gas analysis.

The methods used are found in A Manual of Laboratory Experiments In Exercise Physiology for EXS 101L, pp.4-8, 2000.

The subject volunteers were to meet specific criteria to give us meaningful results that were compatible to the lab's objectives. Subject 1 (male), had a weight of 72.76 kg, lean weight of 59.256 kg, and a fat weight of 13.504 kg. Subject 2 (female), had a weight of 50.79 kg, lean weight of 39.33 kg, and a fat weight of 11.46 kg. The recommended proportion of calories from protein, fat and carbohydrates are as follows: protein 10-15 %, fat < 30%, and carbohydrates 55-60 %. Subject 1's results were: 16% protein, 27 % fat, and 57% carbohydrates. Subject 2's results were: 16% protein, 37% fat, and 47% carbohydrates. Subject 1's proportion o

In conclusion, we calculated the VO2 using units of ml/min/kg to find the relationship between VO2 and body size. We find that VO2 is more precisely related to the subject's lean body mass. Subject 1, the male, has a higher VO2 than subject 2, the female.

f calories better follows the recommended. Subject 1's VO2 is higher than Subject 2's. We are considering the relationship between resting VO2 and body size.

When comparing the results between the two subjects, we must recognize some possible factors why their results ended up the way they did. Chances of human error can occur, whether it be incorrect lab procedures, or calculations. Also, the lab environment itself can add to error because factors like noise and light can interupt the subject from being in a true state of rest. Last, the subjects may have errors also, such as, the state that he/she is in. Subjects can be sick, nervous, stressed, etc. which can change their metobolic rate. Their activity level or food intake may have been exaggerated also. These factors should be considered when comparing data.
