The Death of Ivan Ilych
The short story, "The Death of Ivan Ilych," written by Leo Tolstoy, takes the reader through the life, the suffering, and the death of a man and the reactions of those around him. In the opening of the story, Tolstoy demonstrates the theme surrounding the characters. All of the characters in this story lead selfish lives. There is no regard for the feelings or sufferings of others. The story is made up of a conglomerate of shallow lives not daring to look within at the feelings deep inside them for fear of realizing their unfulfilled lives. Ivan Ilych then began reflecting on how he treated his colleagues and his family with the same indifference his whole life. Ivan Ilych's pain grew more intense each day. The pain caused many problems in his life, most of all it interfered with his duties at work. Everyone began to look down on him. His wife was too busy worrying about the appearances of their lives. Even thought her husband was dying, she was more concerned with entertaining the socialites. Their daughter also felt that her social life was more important than the last days of her father's life. Everyone goes on about their life and ignores this man who is dying.
