Gentlemans Agreement

A detailed Summary of Gentlemans Agreement

Philip Greenwood is a magazine reporter that is offered a job in New York to publish a series on anti-Semitism. Greenwood is having a hard time finding an angle approaching the Hebrew religion. After several nights of no leads he decides to write his good friend from childhood and wants to ask, "what is it like to be Jewish?" Realizing just before he begins to type, there is no way of fully understanding what it feels like to be a minority unless he pretends to be Jewish himself.

In order for him to make this project work few people know the truth about the new man that has arrived in New York City. Philip is a tall slender man with dark features such as his hair and eyes. He is able to pass as Jewish. What Greenwood doesn't realize is that it will effect his entire life style and the ones he loves. The project is under way, and he notices that with in one day word has spread throughout the entire magazine company that a new "Jewi

sh" man has been assign an article to publish.

Philip finally put an end to the make believe when Tommy came home crying from school. He was called a dirty Jew and was not allowed to play with the other boys. Greenwood was finally able to understand and feel what it was like to be Jewish. Even though Tommy's incident at school he still was able to look at everyone as equals. Which is more that what most adults were able to do. Philip Greenwood wrote his article and it was published in the New York magazine in hopes to help everyone realize that everyone is a good and decent person no matter what religion.

This movie hit on a more personal note, on account of many friends of mine are Jewish and were forced to grow up in a world in which did not want them. The Gentleman's Agreement was a movie that helped me understand that it was not only segregation against blacks, but religion also played a major role in the history of America.
