The book was trying to stress that Oishi, who was Lord Asano's chief retainer or right-hand man, was good and had good intentions for avenging his lord's death. This book not only captured my attention by the courage and loyalty, but also the superb writing that allowed me to feel that I was inside the action that was happening in the book. You could predict the character's thoughts and actions by the detailed description of them. I could picture Kataoka's monkey-like grin and Hara's grime and serious attitude. This was an excellent book to use as a tool to teach us about the samurai.
