Isa Kremer: The Poeple's Diva

For this assignment I chose to attend one of the many woman's films movies that is played at the cline library on Thursday nights. The night that I chose to attend, a film about a folk singer named Isa Kremer was scheduled to play. At first I thought, "What was I about to get myself into!" However, I was surprised how interesting her life turned out to be.

Isa Kremer was born in 1887. She grew up singing songs and had a lovely voice. Her voice soon gained her many accommodations from those who heard her. She soon became well known and started to sing all over the world. However, Isa Kremer was not only a singer, she was a pioneer in her own right. She was the first person to ever sing Yiddish on a concert stage. Not only was she the first, she refused to let any one stop her from singing it. She was also a very strong and powerful woman. She used her power and influence in many ways. One way in which she used her status was to smuggle her family out of Odessa. She also had both of her husbands released from political prisons and secured their safety because of who she was. However, her status didn't last forever. As she aged she became more or less broke. She now had to sing in order to make ends-meat and she was now having trouble packing concert hall like she once did with ease.

I had a very mixed reaction to this film or should I say to the way that Isa Kremer lived her life. I recognize that she was a pioneer and an amazing woman especially considering the time period in which she grew up. However, in my eyes it seemed
