In the play, King Lear, written by William Shakespeare the soliloquy delivered by Edgar, the legitimate son of the Earl of Gloucester, in Act II, scene 3 was quite insightful. Edgar recites this soliloquy because he was tricked by his brother Edmund, the bastard son of the Earl of Gloucester, to flee so their father would not harm him. Edmund told the Duke of Cornwall that he suspects Edgar left because he is aiding the enemy. These accusation makes Cornwall denounce him as a traitor. Moments before the Earl of Gloucester arrives at Cornwall's castle Edmund injures himself making it appear as if Edgar is to blame. The Earl of Gloucester is forced to believe that Edgar fled after injuring his dear brother Edmund. This devious act wins the support of the Earl of Gloucester and makes him banish his legitimate son, Edgar. The purpose of this soliloquy sets the basis for the rest of the play in which everything is done through disguises and behind close doors. A short soliloquy recited by Edgar set the whole theme for King Lear. It demonstrated how plotting behind other's backs and using disguises truly highlights the nature of human beings. The costume may be used for in an honorable manner like Edgar did, for he only wanted to stay close to his father. Kent is also a good example of an honorable disguise because he took care of poor King Lear as a servant. Goneril and Regan are two deceitful young women who carefully plan their own father's demise behind his back, making them the perfect example of greediness. The decision Edgar makes to live his life as simple man rather than a man of noble blood, which is his true title, reveals a lot about his character. First Edgar believes everything that Edmund tells him, that says he is a very trusting person perhaps in his case, too trusting. Secondly, Edgar's love for his father knows no bounds. He disguises himself as a lower rank so he can still serve his father without him knowing it. During the final act of the play, you finally see Edgar's true feelings for his brother once he's learned how he was horribly tricked. Edgar knows that he should not have disguised himself and lived in hiding. He challenges the bastard son and kills him in front of the Duke of Albany, so Albany knows that Edmund was a traitor, not Edgar. scaped from the pursuit of others(II,3, l1-3).
