Frankenstein and Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

In the novels Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the protagonists find themselves isolated; at times from friends and at other times, society. Dr. Henry Jekyll, scientist of the mystical would seclude himself in his cabinet where he could madly experiment with the dual nature of mankind. The monster, hideous and despisable lived in a non-accepting world where he must accept living a life of solitude. Dr. Henry Jekyll isolates himself from his friends and from society so that he may pursue his scientific beliefs, whereas the monster in Frankenstein must face a life of isolation; not by his choice but by society's cruel and discriminatory nature. In each case, man makes the decision weather or not to be isolated. In Dr. Henry Jekyll's case he wishes to be alone and secluded from the world in general. The monster on the other hand wishes to become one with the world but is forced into isolation due to his ugliness and disfigurements. Society then forces him into a world that he alone must face.

The monster in Frankenstein wished to become friends with the world that he was brought into. He wanted to understand his nature and his feelings, but society=s cruel and discriminatory nature didn=t allow him to create the harmony that he wished to achieve between him and the species that create him. The monster=s first encounter with man was one of A great curiosity.@ (Shelley 90) The man was afraid Ashrieked loudly and ...ran across the field.@ (Shelley 90) The monster was interested in seeing something he had never seen, his new feelings had overcome him but man=s feelings were not ready to accept something they had never seen; in result the monster had to face his first experience of non-acceptance. The monster had rocks thrown at him and had villagers chase him. He found a habitation situated beside the DeLacey families= cottage and there he would stay away from society and from the world. He Aremembered too well [his] treatment from the night before@ (Shelley 91) and from that hostile reception he would hide from the family in the little hut. His hideousness, ugliness and evilness isolate him from society. In this novel, man is not ready to accept anything that is not ideally human. The monster, wants more than anything to be friends with man, on more then one occasion he attempts the kindling of a friendship but the fire is extinguished by the prejudices of man.
