women in hamlet

The catalyst for a Shakespearean tragedy is a female's transgression of the socio-sexual order and male authority. Women in Shakespeare's Hamlet stepped out of the traditional female role. They became examples of true pioneers in the equal rights movement for their gender. They rebel against the male oppression. Ophelia had pre-marital relations with young Hamlet and Gertrude married her brother-in-law. Both women were able to make their men do as they please, because of their uncanny ability to manipulate men with their femininity.

Through the power of seduction, she managed to convince Claudius, King Hamlet's brother to do it. Only women could entice a man into killing his own sibling. King Hamlet was murdered because Gertrude no longer wanted to have an adulterous relationship with Claudius. Gertrude made it seem as a win situation. This way she could marry her newfound love, Claudius would become king and she would retain her throne in the royal family.

Furthermore, Gertrude's controversial marriage to Claudius also managed to infuriate some of the characters in this marvelous play. The reason this marriage took place was so that Gertrude could keep her rank within society, that being queen and the power that came with it. If
