Antigone
In Sophocles' play Antigone, Creon, the king of Thebes, and his niece Antigone, have distinct conflicting values. Creon's regard for the laws of the city causes him to abandon all other beliefs. He feels that all should obey the laws set forth by him, even if other moral or religious beliefs state otherwise. Antigone, however, reveres the beliefs of the gods. She feels that their laws should be obeyed above all others, especially when in respect to family. Creon has a very strong opinion about the laws of his city and the laws passed by him. His method of enforcing them is very strict. Creon orders that Polynices, who is Antigone's brother, will not be buried because of his dishonor towards Thebes: who returned from exile, home to his father-city and the gods of his race, consumed with one desire- to burn them roof to roots-who thirsted to drink his kinsmen's blood and sell the rest to slavery: that man-a proclamation has forbidden the city
to dignify him with burial, mourn him at all. (223-28) Antigone does not want to let her brother left without a proper burial. The issue of burying Polynices requires a grasp of Greek ideas about death. An unburied body meant that a soul was condemned to torment. It was the greatest obligation of the family, therefore, to see that a body was properly interred. This was more than a matter of family loyalty, it was an act of piety demanded by the gods. @@@ Antigone's beliefs in this matter are far more important than the laws set by the king. She refused to back down from her opinion even when confronted by the king and sentenced to death. Antigone' reasoning is: Furthermore, if anyone is caught burying Polynices, they will be killed for disobeying his order. beneath the earth, ordain such laws for men. Antigone and Creon have different ideas of what is right and what is wrong. However one cannot say who is right and who is wrong, for that
