Go Ask Alice
The Book "Go Ask Alice", written by an anonymous 15-year-old drug user, is about the degeneration of a life, soul and body. It is a tale of fear, courage, hate, pain, and the ultimate fight to survive. The story is tough and uncompromising, honest and disturbing. "Go Ask Alice" is a diary of a teenage girl who was involved with and addicted to drugs in the late sixties. This book starts as a teenager's daily diary. Almost everyday for about 2 years, 'Alice' writes in her diary, expressing her feelings and thoughts about what's going on in her world. Alice goes through many hard times in her life dealing with drug abuse, sex, runaways, prostitution, rape, homelessness, mental hospitals, infidelity, and a whole lot of other subjects in the same vein. The Book starts off with 'normal' days and a normal family, and with the blink of an eye 'Alice' turns towards drugs, sex, and running away. The first time drugs came into Alice's mind was when she was invited to a party. One of the kids spiked her drink with LSD, as she began a frightening journey into darkness. This typical teenager thoughtfully and articulately outlined what growing up is like for a lot of young people. While the primary lesson of the diary is not to use drugs, I
Alice talks in detail about what she went through and the reader feels her pain as she is destroyed by her own doing, literally from the inside out. Her words make the reader confused, angry, sad, and speechless. The reader can pick up from the selection of detail and use of description how messed up Alice had gotten, and what kind of stuff was going on in her mind. The following passage was written when Alice was in a mental hospital: "I cant close my eyes because the worms are still crawling on me. They are eating me. They are crawling in my nose and gnawling in my mouth and oh my god...I've got to get you back in your case because the maggots are crawling off my bleeding writhing hands into your pages. I will lock you in. you will be safe." The Writer's use of language and selection of detail used to create certain impressions was quite obviously shown. The author was very descriptive, which made the diary more interesting, as the reader could image Alice's feelings and actions that were taking place. Later on in the diary, after Alice had 'changed' her way of living, it was evident that her values and attitudes had altered. At first, before Alice had been introduced to drugs she seemed to be pleasant, polite, well mannered, courteous and respectful. However, Alice developed a new attitude. She became a paranoid, rude, bad-mannered self-centered, spiteful drug addict, all because of her newly found desire for drugs, and the new crowd of homeless street kids she would hang around with. "...Introduced me to torpedos on Friday, and speed on Sunday. They are both like riding shooting stars through the milky way, only a million, trillion times better... I felt great, free, abandoned, a different, improved, perfected specimen on a different, improved, perfected species. It was wild! It was Beautiful!" Alice takes the reader on a journey through the existence of a teenage drug addict. We know her every thought; watch her as she repeatedly attempts to straighten herself out, then crashes back into a drug - induced oblivion.
