Andrew Jackson became the nations seventh president in 1829. During his presidency, he made quite a few significant changes to the role of presidency and American politics. Jackson was a man that was very popular among the citizens and was known as the "peoples president". He was the start of a new era of democracy in American Politics, being the one of the first democrats of his time. Jackson's presidency was truly one of hard work, dedication, and high demand. After a bitter fight for the presidency, and finally achieving the position after running in two elections, this democrat made a huge name for himself. Jackson supporters were poor and relatively new voters. Unlike other races (besides 1824) all white men were allowed to vote rather than just white, male, property owners. The election of Jackson in 1828 tripled the votes cast from about 356,00 in 1824, to 1.1 million in 1828. This made the power of the voters evident in this founding republic. However, this election also stirred another change, the revival of the two-party system. An opposition party had arisen and with it came many conflicts, but the new
party would also strengthen the democratic process by stirring debates on key issues and giving two different views on every matter. Jackson had two major events occur during his presidency. One being the Indian Crisis, two being the National Bank. Jackson supported the states efforts to remove Native American tribes from their territories and to farm the land from which they were taken. Not only did he take their land, but he also helped congress pass the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This act gave Indians part of the Louisiana Purchase in exchange for lands taken from them in the East. Roughly 100,000 Indians were relocated from 100 million acres of cultivated land to 32 million acres of uncultivated land, now known as Oklahoma. The civilized tribe, known as the Cherokees tried to sue and gain more land but according to the United States, they were not citizens and had no authority to sue. Jackson's antipathy toward these people was typical of the frontier settler, and because this policy opened more land to settlement, most westerners supported it with enthusiasm.
