Macbeth
A.C. Bradley defines a Shakespearean play as "a story of human actions producing exceptional calamity and endnig in the death of a man in high estate". All of these are evident in the Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Human action is shown in the actions of Claudius, Hamlet, Ophelia, and Laertes. The calamity is established by the murders and deaths that occur in Hamlet, and the death of a man in high estate is defined by the death of the Royal Family. Shakespeares plays are defined by the tragic story they tell. Bradely believes to every Shakespearean play there is human actions causing many misfortunes. Human action is shown in every character throughout the play. Action is taken by Claudius to murder the King and marry Gertrude. Hamlet hesitates with his action til the end of the play when he finally wins the battle of inner struggle and revenges his fathers death. Human action is seen in every scene of Shakespeare's play and along with it come percussions for the
characters action and a resolution to that. With calamity every Shakespearean tragedy seems to be plagued with a death of a man in high estate. In Macbeth Macbeth is killed by Macduff in the final scene, in King Richard III when at his highest level of power we see Richard murdered, and in Hamlet we see several deaths of men in high estate. Shakespearean tragedies are overwhelmed with treason, murder, and lies. In Hamlet many men of high estate meet there tragic end all being by murder. Hamlet's father is murdered by his brother by poison. Polonius is murdered by Hamlet leading to the death of Laertes while he tried to revenge his fathers death, and Claudius is finally revenged upon by Hamlet at the end of play falling death to poison. Similar to other Shakespearean plays the main character dies and the new hero enters to overthrow him.
