The Tempest- Destiny

Ariel and Caliban - Individual Destiny

In William Shakespeare's The Tempest, the former Duke of Milan,

Prospero, is marooned on a desert island. While on the island, he catches two

slaves named Ariel and Caliban. Sharply different in both body and mind, their

differences in character control their ultimate destiny. Ariel is portrayed as an

airy spirit who is faithful and close to Prospero and Caliban is a resentful beast

who dislikes Prospero. This leads to Ariel gaining his freedom and Caliban

remaining a prisoner of the island on which he was born.

Ariel is Prospero's "brave spirit" (Shakespeare 737). Throughout the play,
