A small child steals a candy bar from the neighborhood grocery store because he likes the taste; a group of teens break into a car so that they can steal the stereo and listen to the latest CD's; a drug addict holds up a convince store so that he can get the money he needs to get "high"; a business man embezzles millions of dollars so that he can make payment on his houses; a man murders his wife so that she can collect on his insurance policy. What is the common motive behind all of the crimes? Criminologists and social psychologists have studied this question for decades only to come up with conflicting answers as to why these crimes are being committed every day in the United States. However, one aspect has seemed to be overlooked, the basic desire for sense gratification. Everyday the media saturates the public with messages that promote self-pleasure and that success in life depends on the acquisitions of those objects that make such pleasures possible. Since it is not the average criminals who are committing computer crimes, the CCIPS can not go about catching the perpetrators in a conventional manner. Theoretically any computer terminal with access to the World Wide Web can commit these crimes. This means that almost every computer has the potential to transducer illegal behavior. Without these specially trained individuals it might be almost impossible to catch and prosecute the people responsible for committing the computer crimes. Just recently Russian and Italian investigators made a large-scale bust on an alleged child pornography ring. Since the investigating team had no jurisdiction across international boarders they were forced to call interpol, a global police force, to make the final arrests. For the most part, this is how most of these crimes are solved. The money that can go along with cybercrime is phenomenal and seems to be the main reason as to why anyone would get caught up in it in the first place. The child pornography ring was making up to a thousand dollars an order. In a sense "the criminals are dealing with more money then are the task forces that are trying to stop them"(Littman 21). he case. The criminal, on the other hand, is just trying to follow all of the media's messages the best way that they know how. And if that means committing crimes then so be it. Another aspect that is perhaps the most serious is on-line identity theft. People have been making fake identification for decades however, now this crime has become indefinitely worse with the invention of the Internet.
