Chernobyl

Chernobyl was one of the largest and most powerful nuclear reactors in the former Soviet Union. It was used to power the part of the U.S.S.R now known as Ukraine. Also it was thought of as one of the safest nuclear reactors in the world. But on April 26, 1986 something went terribly wrong and it is now thought of as the worst nuclear disaster in history. It killed over 100,000 people with its radiation and is still expected to contribute to the deaths of over 300,000 people.

This disaster was caused by a number of things including negligence. On April 25, 1986, the day before the accident a test was scheduled to take place. This test was to see if the emergency systems would work properly in case of power loss. At 1:00 am the Soviet made RBMK class reactor was running at full power with normal conditions. Then the operators slowly began to reduce power in the reactor. Then the scientists waited twelve hours while reducing the power until it was at 50% of normal. Now that the power was lower the Number Two turbine was switched off because it was not needed to take in the smaller amount of steam.

Normally during the test the power would have been further reduced to 30% but the Soviet Power Authority would not all

Even though the radiation is killing people and another explosion could happen. Chernobyl is not the most dangerous reactor in the Western world. At Kozloduy in Bulgaria Soviet engineers took all the operating manuals as they left, leaving almost no directions for the operation and maintenance that has to be performed to keep the reactor from malfunctioning and melting down. Many scientists agree that "high-risk" reactors such as these two, and the fifteen other RBMK reactors that are in operation should be shut down as soon as possible to prevent another disaster from occurring. This probably will not happen soon because the need for electrical power is great in these areas and the countries probably can not afford it.

There were two major explosions at Chernobyl, the first destroyed the reactor number four, and the second blew lumps of fuel and graphite into the air. These lumps landed in a lot of dangerous places setting fires and destroying more property. The fires were only the first emergency. The first fire fighters to arrive at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had 3 fire engines and were led by Lieutenant Pravik of the Chernobyl town Fire Brigade. As soon as they got there they decided that the crews weren't going to be enough, and sent out a distress signal to the surrounding area including Kiev, Pripyat, and Chernobyl town.

When the Pripyat fire brigade arrived minutes later they made an error that cost some of their lives. They decided to fight the fires from inside the reactor building. Most of that brigade later died because of radiation poisoning. Ten minutes later a third brigade arrived on the scene of the disaster, Major Leonid Telyatnikov who was the commander of that group ordered the brigade to climb up on top of the third reactor to put out the many fires there.

ow this because of the vast amount of electricity needed to power that part of Ukraine. On April 26 at 12:28 AM the staff received permission to resume the reactor power reduction. But one of the operators made a fatal mistake. He forgot to reset a controller that would have kept the power at 30% of normal. This caused the power to fall to 1% and water started to fill the core, also xenon, which is a neutron absorber, started to build up. Then the water that was filling the core was heated and turned into steam by the nuclear reaction. The operator then decided to remove all of the controller rods from the core to force the power to 7%. This was a direct violation of safety rules and the reactor became very unstable because it was not built to work in such low levels of power. The core was also filled with water, which it was never designed to hold. The operator tried to take control of the water flow manually but was unsuccessful because even small temperature changes can cause huge surges in power. The operator then turned off the emergency automatic shutdown progra
