Huck Finn
Through out the history of literature, many great works illustrate a character who is an outsider to his society. This character serves to shed light on the values of their society. One such novel is Mark Twain's American classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In this great work, the main character Huck Finn is an struggles to live as an outcast in society. This conflict and its resolution aid in the development of three different themes. To begin with, one of the themes this conflict helps develop is that society's values and laws can be in conflict with higher moral values. One of the reason Huck is an "outsider" is because he does not like society's rules, regulations, and expectations. For the most part, he considers some of society's rules to be unjust. For example, Huck knows that he "better off" with the widow and not his father. His father is a drunkard man who is thinks that Huck should not be better than him, that Huck should not be able to know how to read when he could not. Also, another theme is freedom means different things to different people. Huck is also an outcast because he wants to be free. For example, Huck's freedom is a combination of both literal and figurative meanings. He literally wants to be free from society. He wants to be free to choose specific clothes, follow schedules, and go to the woods anytime that he wants to. Figuratively, his idea of freedom is not set. It can vary and change from day to day. In addition, along He sees what freedom means to others on the way to his freedom when he encounters Jim. Jim's freedom is literal. He wants to live in the free states. There, he wants to get a job and earn enough money to buy back his family. This also adds with Huck's conflict with society. In conclusion, Huck's character helps the presentation of the conflict of him being an outsider in society. In the end of the story Huck defies society and helps Jim.
