Anne Boleyn

Although Anne Boleyn was queen of England for only three years, she played a major role throughout the Renaissance. Mother to Elizabeth I, she has been well-known for her political influence in England.

Anne's date of birth varies widely. Some articles claim she was born in 1502 or 1503, while others believe she was born as late as 1512-which would make her a little older than eleven when the King of England first beheld her and fell in love with Anne. At any rate, Anne was born into the Boleyn family most probably at Blickling Hall in Norfolk. Her father, Sir Thomas Boleyn-husband to the Duke of Norfolk's daughter, Elizabeth Howard-was fairly well-off in their time. All three of their children-Mary, Anne, and George-were given a wonderful education. Anne, especially, was very bright, even as a little girl she was able to learn extremely quick. Although not much is known about Anne's childhood, it is said she was born with a sixth finger and a huge mole on the side of her neck-two signs of witchcraft, and many people throughout her time believed her to worship the devil.

She is first publicly mentioned as an attendant lady accompanying Mary Tudor, the King's sister, when she set off to Fran

"Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, according to the law, for the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. But I pray God save the King and send him long to reign over you. For a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never; and if any person will meddle of my cause I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me."

Henry actually had had a happy marriage to Katherine De Aragon, and his marriage probably would have never been questioned if it weren't for Anne. However, Katherine had only produced one heir-a baby girl-and had had six miscarriages if not more. He thought it only necessary that he should have another wife. Anne quickly refused him-she had learnt that it was he who had parted Harry from herself. But Henry was like "a spoiled child...he found everything out of reach irresistible". (Noah Lofts) Henry appointed her father a knight of the Garter, calling him Viscount Rochford. He gave her family many financial rewards including her brother, George, who was given a Norfolk manor. But still Anne refused him. He showered her with gifts and her family with titles. He sent Anne flowers, jewels, gold, and an unending supply of love-letters. She still held back, unless, she told him, she became Queen. It is known that she must have relented and gone to his bed for in mid-January of 1533, she became pregnant. Before long, they were secretly married, with only a small handful of witnesses and onlookers. When the Pope heard what Henry had done, he was furious. He ordered Henry to abandon Anne and take back Katherine or he would be excommunicated from the Church. Henry thought he had every reason to take a new wife. After all, Katherine had been his brother's wife and he had been very young when he had married Katherine after Arthur's death. Henry VIII called his council together and told them that he was already married to Anne and that she was pregnant. With help
