Close to 70 years ago, the United States of America was spiraling out of aprosperous era and into a drastic, unwanted change. The Great Depression was one of the most agonizing times for American society and economics. The Depression's effects were devastating to both the people of society, and the U.S. economy. This social and economical crisis can be analyzed starting with the period before the stock market Crash of 1929, the years of the Great Depression itself, and with the attempts of a reform in Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The Depression's effects will be examined as they tie into the society, economics, and politics of American History. Following World War I, the United States saw a rising standard of living in a period known as the "Roaring 20's." Industry began to grow at a rapid pace, especially after Calvin Coolidge took office in 1923 as successor to president Warren G. Harding. Harding, a republican and laissez-faire capitalist, supported policies that reduced taxes, permitted monopolies to form, and let the inequality of wealth and income reach outrageous levels (Tanner).
