A Vacation to Remember
It was August Fifteenth, 1991 and we were ready to embark on the, what was now becoming annual, family voyage to Cape Cod. I thought it was going to be the death of me having to share the back seat with my painfully annoying six year old sister for the six hour car ride. However having to listen to nonstop Raffi through the voice of a chipmunk couldn't prepare me for the natural disaster I would soon face. We arrived at usual, quaint New England, home in North Truro, Cape Cod and we're prepared for a pleasant two weeks of sun bathing and swimming at the beach. All went as planned for the first two days, the temperature was beautiful and the waves were exceptional. Minor reports of a big storm possibly hitting the coast loomed in the back of beachgoers' minds; however nothing could ruin their vacation at the beach. The seemingly endless coast was packed with people who seemed more than content with the weather so far, until the eighteenth arrived. Word came in from the National Weather Service that a hurricane was most definitely going to hit Cape Cod's coast by early as tomorrow afternoon. When I first received word that we were going to be hit by a hurricane, I jumped with an incredible surge of exci
I woke up the next morning early just to be sure I was ready to help save my family. I wasn't scared because I was a man, my age was in double digits and I was old enough to protect my family. I quickly ran outside to see what it was like, shockingly it was incredibly tranquil. Where was this beast that terrified so many? I looked around saw no breeze and heard nothing. There was a sense of impending disaster wandering along the horizon. I stood tall and firm like a statue overlooking my surroundings much like Stonewall Jackson on his hill overlooking the battlefield. I was ready for the hurricane's relentless assault. I could hear the waves in the background crashing with a mighty roar let out from the oceans belly. I looked up at the slowly fading sun, it shone with a watery glare in which was a slight tint of emerald green. It was the most breathtakingly beautiful event I had ever seen in my life. The storm was close now, and I sought shelter in the house, my fort, which I would protect. Suddenly the storm hit, nature had unleashed her mighty beast. The wind came first, howling like a screaming woman. It arrived in cannon like blasts, full of rain. The wind picked up hefty garden furniture like feathers and sent them splintering into the side of the house. Oppressive midnight black clouds scudded high overhead, trees were lacerated of their branches, roof shingles tore loose, windows blew out; the doors slammed, opening and shutting at a pace which had even me frightened. In the distance I observed a dense and fairly high bank of fog rolling in fast from the tumultuous ocean. Then to my dismay I noticed it wasn't fog, but water, at the least a twenty foot high sea swell, sent straight from Poseidon himself. The sea wall was pulled up by the low pressur
