An Incident of injustice or unfairness
An Incident of injustice or unfairness It was a hot, muggy Monday morning. We had only been back to school for three weeks and I was now in the Tenth grade. Up came lunchtime, so all my friends and I headed down to the cafeteria. We got our food and sat down at a table near the back. While we were eating our lunch, I observed one of the junior football players throwing food at another kid. His name was Jim. I knew who he was, and what he was like. He was one of those kids that could do anything and get away with it, because he was popular and was involved in sports. He had a snobby attitude, and always got things his way. Anyways, the other kid, Rick, was a freshman. I sort of knew Rick. He was kind of quiet but was a normal kid. He didn't bother people or make anyone mad. Why was Jim doing this? Well, it seemed as though Rick's sister, Jen, broke up with Jim about a week earlier. I guess they had been going out for a long time. So Jim was trying to take out his anger on Rick. He wanted a fight. Rick was sitting by himself but Jim was sitting with all his jock friends. Jim threw some more things at Rick, who acted like nothing was happening. Finally, Rick turned around and said, "Would you please stop that?"
After thinking about the whole situation for a while, I decided it would do no good to argue that Jim was the one who should have been punished in the situation. Rick had already served six or seven days of his suspension so raising a hoot would have only embarrassed me and not have gotten his suspension eased. But I knew deep down that the whole situation was unfair to Rick. I felt that if I would have mentioned something, I would have been embarrassed because everyone else had though else wise. And who was I? I was just a sophomore. No one would have listened to me. Well after Rick had gotten off suspension, he started to think that he really was the guilty one here. He thought that he had started it by telling Jim to shut up and stop bothering him. But this wasn't true. Jim should have received all the punishment, not Rick. Rick was just defending himself from the onslaught of punches from Jim. He didn't do anything wrong. Because Jim was the popular "coaches pet" type kid, he got off. This kind of thing happens all the time. It's like popular sports figures being able to get out of charges just because of their status as a professional, etc. For example, the O.J. Simpson case. Rick was just a regular old kid. But Mr. boon didn't know this. The next day, we all found out that Rick was sentenced to nine days of suspension. Jim received pretty much nothing. He had to stay after school for a half hour for three days and help grade papers or something like that. It was kind of a "low profile" punishment. I found this very odd but I somewhat expected it. Jim walked around acting like he was the victim here. I felt that this whole situation was really unfair. I don't like it when people are benefitted because they are popular, or whatnot. This was one of those cases. If Jim would have been suspended or gotten in any trouble, he wouldn't have been able to play football for a certain number of games.
