This book first begins in 1642 on a June day. Hester Prynne is taken before crowd of people in a Boston town. Hester was holding in her arms a baby. On the bodice of her dress a scarlet letter A, which stood for adultery. Hester was staying in a jail with her child after she was found out of seducing another man, while her husband was in captivity by Indians. No one in the town knew who her lover was. As her punishment she was to wear a scarlet A on her bosom and stand in front of the public for hours at a time.
