He often acts in one manner, and then suddenly in a manner completly contradictory. Raskolknikov is best described when Razumihim attempts to explain Raskolknikov to his mother and sister as being a "morose, gloomy, proud & haughty...suspicious and fanciful. He has a noble nature and a kind heart...he would rather do a cruel thing than open his heart freely. Sometimes, though, he is not at all morbid, but simply cold and inhumanly callous, its as if he were alternating between two characters." (Dostoevsky 200) His two characters are best interpreted as 1)his detatched, cold, intellectual side which emphasizes "power" and "self will" and 2) his warm compassionate humane side which suggests self-submissive and meekness.
