Titanic
On April 10th 1912, 2,228 people set off aboard the RMS Titanic to arrive in America, some hoped to start a new life in a new country, while others were just off for a good vacation. The Titanic's dimensions were: length-882.5 feet long, height-175 feet, beam-92.5 feet, draft- 59.5 feet, propellers-3, 1 center, 16 feet in diameter, 2 wings, 23 feet in diameter. Boilers- 29 in all, top speed- 25 knots, there were four funnels only three were needed but they added a fourth one to make her look more powerful and fast. The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards in Belfast, Ireland. She was the second in a trio of the "Olympic Class" of ships. Olympic was the first, followed by Titanic, and then came Gigantic that was later named Britannic. Titanic was launched on May 31st 1911 to a crowd of well wishers. Since it was uncustomary for the Whit Star Line to christen their ships, there was no formal ceremony. After 62 seconds she slid down to the River Lagan and on her way to the fitting out basin. When she got there, hundreds of skilled workers filled out her interior under the direction of Thomas Andrews (chief draughtsman of Harland & Wolff) and his assistant Edward Wilding. It was verbally agreed that mone
Once aboard the Titanic, her passengers would see the most modern and luxurious accomodations on any ocean. They included electric light and heat in every room, electric elevators (3 in 1st class, 1 in 2nd class), the first swimming pool seen on any liner, a squash court, a Turkish bath, a gymnasium, a six-story glass-domed grand staircase, a a la carte restaurant, the Palm Court and Verandah restaurants, and the festive Cafe Persian. Titanic had two musical ensembles (rather than one). There were two libraries, first-class and second-class, the cabins in steerage were better than some of the things that the steerage passengers had enjoyed at home. The Carpathia had rescued 705 people. There was a prayer for thanks of those who were saved, and then a funeral service for the more than 1,500people who had died. The ship sailed away at 8:50am to continue the search for possible survivors. None would be found. www.thesmokinggun.com/titanic/tsos.shtml
