Titanic

On April 10th 1912, 2,228 people set off aboard the RMS Titanic to arrive in America, some hoped to start a new life in a new country, while others were just off for a good vacation. The Titanic’s dimensions were: length-882.5 feet long, height-175 feet, beam-92.5 feet, draft- 59.5 feet, propellers-3, 1 center, 16 feet in diameter, 2 wings, 23 feet in diameter. Boilers- 29 in all, top speed- 25 knots, there were four funnels only three were needed but they added a fourth one to make her look more powerful and fast.

The Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards in Belfast, Ireland. She was the second in a trio of the “Olympic Class” of ships. Olympic was the first, followed by Titanic, and then came Gigantic that was later named Britannic.

Titanic was launched on May 31st 1911 to a crowd of well wishers. Since it was uncustomary for the Whit Star Line to christen their ships, there was no formal ceremony. After 62 seconds she slid down to the River Lagan and on her way to the fitting out basin.

When she got there, hundreds of skilled workers filled out her interior under the direction of Thomas Andrews (chief draughtsman of Harland & Wolff) and his assistant Edward Wilding. It was verbally agreed that mone
