To evaluate the effectiveness of the kiosk and the icons used in the interfaces, we can use several different evaluation techniques. There are three types of techniques we will be looking at: the first one is the 'Empirical method', the second one is the 'Observational technique' and the last one is the 'Query technique'. In this section, there will be a short description of each technique with an example of how it could be used to evaluate the kiosk.
One of the most effective ways of evaluating a design is to use a controlled experiment. This provides experimental indication to support a particular demand or assumption. Different factors come into effect when analysing this method.
Subjects: The kiosk is designed to be used by the general public and not only the computer science undergraduates. So it is important the subject we choose for our experiments are representative of the user group. This means that to use people from computer science only will not give a fair reflection of the effectiveness of the icons used on the kiosk. But by using people with little or no knowledge of computers, touch screens and icons, we will be able to determine which icons are best suited. For example, if w

We can evaluate the kiosk by positioning two cameras, one facing the kiosk screen and the second one focusing on the user. By watching the playback, we should be able to see the most common errors, faults and the user's reaction when using the kiosk.
