Fine Tuned Universe
Explaining the existence of God by philosophical means is an arduous task. However, upon digestion of the argument for intelligent design, God the Creator's existence is no longer a question, but a reality. William Paley and Richard Swinburne, through the wristwatch metaphor and the teleological arguments, prove that the universe is a product of intelligent design. Even in his critique of the argument, David Hume provides startling evidence for the design of the universe. The universe has been designed to serve a purpose, and that purpose is the prerogative of the supreme designer- God. The argument for intelligent design is as follows. Living things exhibit a complex order. It is highly improbable that this may have happened by chance. Therefore, there must be an intelligent creator of the universe- God. Paley uses the "Watch and the Watchmaker" to argue the design of the universe. The watch, symbolic of the world, is obviously the product of human workmanship. Unlike a stone, which is uniform in composition, and on the ground by chance, the watch was made for a reason. Every element of the watch serves a specific purpose. Each miniscule crank and gear has a specific function. The goal or duty of the watch was conceived by a d
In looking at the teleological argument, intelligent design becomes more apparent. "Since [animals and plants] could not have come about by natural scientific processes, and since they are very similar to the machines, which rational agents, viz. men, make, it is very probable that [animals and plants] were made by a rational agent-only clearly one much more powerful and knowledgeable than men" (Swinburne 60). Swinburne is drawing parallels between the creations of man and of the designer. This designer is however infinitely more powerful, its creation so much grander, than is man. In the dialogue Hume creates between Cleanthes, Demea, and Philo, he attacks the argument for intelligent design first by allowing one of his characters to support the argument, then berating the advocate by another character. Philo sights some instances whereby "a stone will fail, that fire will burn, that the earth has solidity, we have observed a thousand and a thousand times; and when any new instance of this nature is presented, we draw without hesitation the accustomed inference. The exact similarity of the case gives us a perfect assurance of a similar event, and a stronger evidence is never desired nor sought after" (Hume 53). Hume then draws a comparison between the blood flow of animals and the alleged flow of sap th
