Individuality

In every story at least one character exhibits his or her own form of individuality. Individuality can be defined as the sum of the traits peculiar to an individual. In the stories "Forgiveness," "Smokers," and "Haircut," we see certain characters utilizing their individuality. Rocky and Wendy, Eugene, and Jim Kendall could be considered individuals because of the way they think and act.

In the story "Forgiveness," Rocky and Wendy are depicted as individuals with their own beliefs. Wendy decides that she does not have to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Coach Whalen becomes so annoyed that he gives Wendy a detention. Despite the detention she continues to read during the Pledge. Her disregard for authority makes Coach Whalen so aggravated that he actually suspends Wendy for three days. Rocky hears about Wendy's suspension and immediately takes an interest in her. De


sperately wanting to meet Wendy, Rocky believes they have many characteristics in common. Rocky also takes a stand when he decides to quit football because the coach wants to let the star player go after he gets drunk and breaks into a car. Coach Whalen asks the team, "What do you say, men? Will you let bygones be bygones?" Rocky and Wendy start spending more time together, and really get to know one another. They act the way they feel like acting, and not the way everyone else wants them to act.

Each character has his or her own unique quality that identifies who they are. Some people are bizarre, others are just plain mischievous. Rocky and Wendy cohere so well, they end up together at the end. Eugene is extremely peculiar, yet he does not seem to mind one bit.
