KKK
Looking at the Knight In a world of political and racial hate there is a breeding ground for hate groups and anti-government malitias. One group spawned from such a hate center is the Ku Klux Klan. With its hate projected primarily toward the black community of the post civil war south it attracted numerous members as it slowly grew in the social order of the south and in the politics of the nation. Since their beginning in 1865 the Ku Klux Klan has lasted through endless turmoils from their disbanding in 1871 by Ulysses S grant to their weak leadership of today. Today, though, Americas longest lasting gang is fighting for survival, as it tries to gain members in a world of more diverse violent organizations the Klan seems to be at the end of its rope. The origins of the Ku Klux Klan can not be traced back to any single person, but instead its origin is found in a meeting of six confederate officers on December 24 !865, who named their society after the Greek word Kuklos meaning circle (Ku Klux Klan). These men felt the need for a group to protect their southern past, which they felt was being destroyed by reconstruction, and to prevent the black community from gaining any political power. Unfortunately because the Klan fought against the reconstruction and social advancement of blacks they became an illegal organization (Ku Klux Klan). To stop blacks from voting and exercising their new rights klansmen would dress in white robes and terrorize officials who supported reconstruction and the blacks who tried to vote (Ku Parker 2 Klux Klan). As the klan became more involved in racial hate activities its numbers grew rapidly and with this rapid increase in numbers came more severe and frequent attacks on blacks ranging from cross burning to beatings or death which was done by hanging. Klansmen would attack blacks who spoke out for equality and sometimes they were known to mutilate men's genitals, this was done to prevent them from reproducing(Ezekial 63). When these tactics failed to silence them klansmen would permanently silence them by dropping insubordinates down wells, hanging them, and burning people alive. In what could be considered as the klans first political activity they held a secret convention of klansmen in Nashville Tennessee in 1867. At this convention they adopted a declaration of principals expressing loyalty to the constitution (Ku Klux Klan). Here the klan expressed its purpose for being was to protect the weak innocent and helpless and setup an order of leadership. In its political order the klan appointed a Grand Wizard, Grand Dragon, Grand Titan, and the Grand Cyclops under these were the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (Ku Klux Klan). For four years the klan prospered under the shelter of reconstruction but upon its removal from the south Claimers grew wildly as young men, ready to destroy the blacks who dared to remain in the south, joined. Many of these men were violent natured and sought to gain power in the klavern and klaverns soon began fighting for power among klaverns. The resulting klan was so uncontrollable that the Grand Wizard, Nathan B. Forrest, Disbanded the klan in 1861(Ku Klux Klan). After his order many klaverns disbanded as klan numbers dwindled to an all time low the remaining klaverns competed violently for members until Ulysses S. Grant forced the remaining klaverns to disband(KU Klux Klan). Parker 3 For almost forty years the klan would seem to be no more, to many the klan was a distant memory, during this time period the social status of blacks slowly rose. In 1915 though a new klan emerged out of Georgia, organized by a former priest the Invisible empire, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan remained for the most part
