Kayla

The public obtains information about important events around the world and nation through sources of news. In the coverage of the school shooting of Kayla Rolland Dateline NBC and Time magazine both attempt at successfully catching viewer attention through a presentation of an unbiased report with an eye catching and interesting format.

Visuals and sound used while covering news events catch the viewer's attention, as well as depict a mood of the story. Dateline NBC is a television show possessing time and space for visuals and sound, therefore they are able to do a better job with such aspects. Dateline shows the reaction of the community after hearing news of the tragic shooting, shots of the parents and the children crying once they found each other outside of the school and shots of the ramshackle neighborhood where the families live. Such images make the viewer feel closer to the effects of the tragedy. A metaphor of a horror scene is depicted as the camera moves in slow motion with fuzzy black and white footage of the elementary school.


Many news sources are guilty of one-sided coverage of news events. As the news channel focuses the coverage on only one part of the story, large amounts of important information often are omitted; the viewer then receives a biased report of the incident. The Dateline and Time coverage of the Kayla Rolland tragedy both give the public different views of the information each containing information the other source was lacking. While gathering information from news channels it is important to seek a more than one source before making a conclusion about what was previously viewed.

Time is responsible for raising the question, "Who Killed Kayla Rolland?" Times coverage focuses on a profile of the boy who killed Kayla. The article tells stories about the boy's family; the father is in jail, the boy and his mother moved in with family after the mother was evicted.
