Just a year ago, the National Hockey League adopted a new way to play overtime. They tossed away the old format of five on five hockey, and created four on four hockey just for overtime. This allowed players to play a more open style of play, that which emulates the European method.

The new design only permitted the finesse players on the ice during the five minutes of play. This was because "Coaches did not want the goons on the ice to make an unintelligent penalty to cause the team to be a man short therefore making the game a three on four situation" (CNNSI.COM).
