Huck Finn Journal Freedom

"The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time.... so, when I couldn't stand it no longer I lit out into my rags and was free and satisfied, but she always took me back."

Huck is having trouble adjusting to living with the widow. He is accustomed to living free in the woods, without worrying about possessions, language, or cleanliness.

"Pretty soon I wanted to smoke and asked the widow to let me, but she wouldn't."

This is just another example of Huck losing his freedom, as on his own he would have done what he wanted to.

"And then I put out the light and scrambled out of the window on to the shed."

Huck is exercising his longing for freedom by going out at night with Tom.

Tom and Huck encounter Jim whose freedom is taken away because he is a slave. Huck joins Tom's gang and they plan to take people's freedom away by holding them for ransom.

"Well, I got a good going-over in the morning from old Miss Watson on account of my clothes."
