Teen Suicide

The teenage years are a period of turmoil for just about everyone. Young adolescents are learning new social roles, developing new relationships, getting used to changes in ones body, and making decisions about ones future. Each year thousands of teenagers commit suicide. In the book The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caufield is a young man suffering through the pain of change just like many teenagers are today. Holden is depressed and "Depression almost always leads up to suicide." (Some Facts...1) Even though the scene of the book takes place in the 1950's, suicide was a major factor in that society just as it is today.

Today the daily news tells us that these problems with teenagers are brought up because of problems outside the teen's control, such as divorce, family alcoholism, domestic violence, or even sexual abuse. In such an environment, normal problems can seem insurmountable. Many teens feel they have no where to turn so they will medicate their pain with drugs or alcohol, or even death. Or they will express their rage and frustration in acts of violence or destruction.

Whether a teenager actually wants to die or not, their suicidal behavior speaks of deep feelings of importance and helplessness.
