The neighborhood of Harlem was the place to be in the 20's. It was the jazz age and in New York City, Harlem was the site of an explosion of African-American literature, art, music, and culture. This would become known as the "Harlem Renaissance" or "The New Negro Movement". This was a joyous time but it only lasted for a few years. Part of the reason the Harlem Renaissance began was due to the migration of African-Americans to the northern cities. After World War I many factory jobs opened up which encoraged African-Americans as well as whites to the cities searching for a job.
