I read the book "A World Destroyed: Hiroshima and the Origins of the Arms Race" written by Martin J. Sherwin. I thoroughly enjoyed reading on Hiroshima. Throughout many history classes at different schools I have learned a great deal on Hiroshima, but have found many things in this book that have struck my attention. I really overly enjoyed reading this book, I have learned many new things. I learned many things in this book that I will explain. On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber named the Enola Gay flew over the industrial city of Hiroshima, Japan and dropped the first atomic bomb ever. The city went up in flames caused by the immense power equal to about 20,000 tons of TNT. This obviously was a huge success, this scary project. I learned that this project was made by unpredictable assemblage of civilian people, and military scientific brain power-brilliant, intense, and young people. The isolated mountain setting, known as Los Alamos, New Mexico, was the sight to design and build the bomb that would end World War II, but begin serious controversies concerning its sheer power and destruction. I became interested in this topic because of my interest in science and history. It seemed an app
ropriate topic to read because we are presently studying World War II in my history class. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings were always taught to me with some opinion and I always wanted to know the bomb itself and the unbiased effects that it had. This book was a great opportunity for me to read into the bombings myself. I found that the Manhattan project was the code name for the US effort during World War II to produce the atomic bomb. It was appropriately named for the Manhattan Engineer District of the US Army Corps of Engineers, because much of the early research was done in New York City. Sparked by the refugee physicists in the US the program was slowly organized after Nuclear fission was expressed the fear that Hitler would attempt to build a fission bomb. I am so glad that Hitler did not make the first fission bomb but if he would of made the bomb first he could have dropped it on all of the Jewish countries so they wouldn't of had to go through such pain to live. I also learned that General Groves initial task had been to select a scientific director of the bomb project. That never really ended up happening though, to this day the presidents wished that they would have had appointed someone else as leader of the Atomic bomb. General Groves was a perfect worker, but made the process take much longer than it really needed to take. Ever since the dawn of time man has found new ways of killing each other. The most destructive way of killing people known to man would have to be the atomic bomb. I feel that the atomic bomb should have never been dropped, it was no
