World Strruggle Comes to Division

It is thought that this war that is been ongoing for over a year, began with the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand; however, many other reasons led to this war. Some occurring reasons date as far back as the late 1800's. Nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and the system of alliances were four main factors that pressed the great powers towards this explosive war. Nationalism is the love of one's country rather that the love of a native region. Throughout the 1800's many national groups that were driven by nationalism tried to unite by governments controlled by their own people. However, this desire to unite all the people of a nation under one government had devastating possibilities in Europe, where one government often ruled many nationalities. This is one important reason for the start of the Great War.

Another reason for the start of the war was the practice of imperialism by many countries. Imperialist countries narrowly avoided war many times as they struggled to divide Africa among themselves in the early 1900's. Two of these countries, France and Germany, were on the brink of war several times when the argued about claims to Morocco. Between 1905 and 1911 they settl

This article was found on the web, examined every piece of military equipment used in the Great War. It listed how and when the weapons were used, when they were discovered, who discovered them, and who used them in battle.

Brinkley, Allen. American History a Survey. Vol. 2: Since 1865. Columbia University: McGraw-Hill College, 1999. 2 vols.

I enjoyed reviewing this piece of material, because I found it to be very informative and enlightening. It was very easy to follow along and maintain a solid stream with the flow of the book

"Military Powers get Power" (1995) Internet Site {Internet Explorer} 4 November 2000 (http://www.rockingham/ww1.html)

In the past, wars were often of comparatively short duration, with seasonal campaigns, and usually fought between opposing sides each using mercenary or professional army. The Great War was radically different. Fighting, between volunteer or conscripted soldiers in trenches separated by no-man's-land from their enemy in similar trenches, continued all year; and new, improved methods of killing had evolved such that the scale of injury and death was beyond that which any person had believed possible. With industrialization in Europe, invention and greatly enhanced mass-production manufacturing techniques gave rise to plentiful supplies of poison gas, tanks, powerful explosives, flame-throwers, hand-grenades, fighter and bomber aircraft, and, above all, machine-guns, and accurate long-range artillery. Killing was on a gigantic scale, and surprise and inventiveness were forgotten by Generals who developed their new strategy of "attrition". (http://www.rockingham/ww1.html)

In summary, the 14 points were as follows:

By the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was required to abolish compulsory military service, and to reduce its army to 100,000. To demilitarize all the territory on the left bank of the Rhine River, to stop all importation, exportation, and nearly all production of war material. Also to limit its navy to 24 ships, with no submarines, the naval personnel not to exceed 15,000, and to abandon all military and naval aviation by October 1, 1919. Germany also agreed to permit the trial of former emperor William II by an international court on the charge of "a supreme offense against international morality." For damage incurred by the allied powers during the war, Germany is going to be required to make extensive financial reparation. In addition to money, payment will be made in the form of ships, trains, livestock, and valuable natural resources. Under the treaty, Germany will lose about 27,500-sq mi of its territory. To Poland were added large parts of the provinces of Posen and West Prussia. Plebiscites in southeastern Prussia and Germany also lost its entire colonial empire.

I liked the way this piece of information used color, every (recent) picture was in color. There were diagrams to show how troops advanced and where they advanced in the war, how trenches were set up, and how the soldiers lived. I thought this was a great article of information, but written at a children's level.
