To Breed or not to Breed...

Pets in American society have become so much more than a child's plaything to teach him responsibility. They have become more than just our friends and companions. To most, pets have become a part of the family, a very cherished family member. Still millions of cats and dogs are left homeless every year. How can we avoid this tragedy? Are there just too many to keep housed? The answer is yes. Millions of family pets breed new kittens and puppies at an alarming rate. The pet population is growing out of control. Can we as Americans do anything to stop the over population of domesticated animals? Most definitely, you must have you family pet spayed or neutered.

Every hour in the United States, more than 2,000 dogs and 3,500 cats are born, compared to 415 humans. The yearly statistics include more than 17 million dogs and 30 million cats. Add these animals to an existing pet population of 54 million dogs and 56 million cats and the total exceeds one billion. Earlier puberty, multiple births and briefer pregnancies make dogs and cats far more prolific than humans are. Animal care and control agencies do their best to find loving responsible owners for as many pets as possible, but there are simply not enough homes

You will not have to fight off suitors. When you walk your unneutered dog, every loose male will follow, and nothing will drive them away. Dogs come into heat twice a year and they will attract males for almost three weeks. During breeding season (approximately February through October), cats can come into heat as often as every two weeks, even when nursing their current litter.

Some people may say that neutering your pet is unsafe or inhumane, they are just not right. Neutering is a simple surgical procedure in which the pet's reproductive organs are removed. Dogs and cats can be neutered as early as eight weeks or anytime beyond that age. You can contact a veterinarian to ask questions about neutering and make an appointment, or, if expense is a problem, ask the local humane society about the low-cost spay/neuter clinics in your area.

You will not have to tolerate stains on the rugs and furniture from unneutered female cats and dogs or spraying from unneutered male cats that are marking their territory. This leads to costly replacement of personal items.

You will not have to spend extra money for periodic check-ups for the pregnant mother and for food, examinations, and vaccinations for the puppies or kittens. Not to mention the cost of advertising and the days spent trying to find homes for the offspring.
