Jimmy Carter formally known as James Earl Carter, Jr. was born on October 1, 1924 and was the oldest of four children. He was born in a small farming town of Plains, Georgia and grew up in the nearby community if Archery. Jimmy's father, James Earl Carter, Sr., was a peanut farmer and a storekeeper while his mother, Lillian Gordy, was a registered nurse. Jimmy Carter worked on the farm but as a boy dreamed of attending the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland because his uncle in the United States Navy had sent him postcards of exotic ports. He was the first member of his family ever to go to college. He started at Georgia Southwestern College in 1941 for only a year. In 1975 when Carter announced he was a candidate for president he had almost no national reputation. Nine other Democratic candidates were in the nomination race.
Oddly enough the most likely to trust Carter were blacks. They gave him more than 90 percent of his votes. Other Democrats were questionable of Carter as a Southerner and a man who seemed to be funning against his own party. Labor leaders were not anxious to support him because he was a businessman from an antiunion state. He gained some support by confirming national health insurance and a bill to guarantee a job for all Americans who wanted one. Public opinion polls immediately gave Carter a huge lead.
